KOLKATA, Nov 14 (Reuters) - South Africa sense an opportunity to finally get rid of the choker's tag but the onerous task entails getting the better of the most successful team in the history of 50-overs World Cup, Australia, in Thursday's semi-final in Kolkata. "Hurt by a combination of bad luck and nerves in the business end of showpiece event, South Africa are pitted against a powerhouse who thrive in those big moments as Australia have demonstrated with five titles. South Africa, who have never progressed beyond the last four, are fretting over the availability of skipper Temba Bavuma, who is nursing a hamstring strain. They have looked more comfortable setting targets than chasing one though, and they will expect more penetration from their bowlers against a resurgent Australia. PUNE, India, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Australia coach Andrew McDonald believes Glenn Maxwell's breath-taking shotmaking, best illustrated by his incendiary double hundred in Monday's World Cup match against Afghanistan, will inspire a new generation of cricketers. Hobbled by cramp during the latter stages of his innings, Maxwell smacked 10 sixes and 21 fours in his batting pyrotechnics and McDonald said it would take time to fully appreciate the magnitude of the feat. McDonald said the all-rounder was impacting batsmanship like compatriot Ricky Ponting or South African stalwart AB de Villiers did in the past. Nov 8 (Reuters) - Afghanistan have rebounded from defeat at the World Cup and can do so again, coach Jonathan Trott said after Tuesday's three-wicket loss to Australia in Mumbai. Afghanistan had Australia reeling at 91-7 chasing 292 before Glenn Maxwell's unbeaten 201 snatched a remarkable victory that sealed a semi-final slot for the five-time champions. "We lost the New Zealand game pretty heavily and came back and won the next game," Trott told reporters. Afghanistan had won only one match in their two previous World Cup campaigns but have already won four of their eight matches in India so far. Spinners were bowling different lengths, he was hitting that," Trott said of Maxwell.

Maxwell broke his leg in November and missed Australia's recent tour of South Africa due to an ankle issue which affected his preparations for the tournament. The 35-year-old played the second spinner's role to perfection in the early matches but the swashbuckling batting, which earned him the nickname "Big Show", was not in evidence. "It's probably something I didn't set out to do," Maxwell said of his knock, which included eight sixes and nine fours. Thanks to rapid hundreds by Maxwell and David Warner, Australia racked up 399-8 and bundled out their opponents for 90 in 21 overs to inflict on them the biggest defeat in World Cup history. "It's like a perfect game, when you get 400 and bowl a team out for under 100," Maxwell said.
